Other things we can do to be Green

As you may know, MMI now uses SenEarthCo as an online management tool.  SenEarthCo stands for Sensible Earth Company and is designed to be an Internet based documents manager and communications tool.  what you may not know is that SenEarthCo enables better use of email by giving us the option to email notices to those with email addresses on file and it simultaneously generates labels for those owners who wish to receive paper documents. Our boards of directors should take every opportunity to remind owners that we have a website and of its value as a community resource. But, enough about paper.  What else can we do?

1.  Return land to nature - there is a significant cost savings on mowing when you eliminate lawns. In addition, to the reduction in carbon monoxide produced by lawnmowers, you will enjoy both a cost savings from reduced use of fertilizers and weed chemicals and a reduction in run-off which pollutes our streams and rivers. When you must use lawn chemicals, demand natural products like milky spore for grub control.

2.  Change all common lighting to energy efficient bulbs and fixtures. There can be a bit of an up-front cost, but the cost is more than recovered in reduced energy consumption.

3.  Inspect parking lots for leaking vehicles and order them to be repaired if they are to be permitted back in the community

4.  Use light colored roofing materials to reflect the heat of the suns rays. The sun is more direct in summer and has a greater effect on air conditioning costs than it's benefits in winter. Reduced cost also means less energy consumption.
